Staying Fit and Healthy whilst Travellingkaliburns
As you would all be aware, I absolutely love to travel and find myself overseas more often than not. Over the years I have learnt to understand my bodies “wants” and “needs” and adapt to each situation at hand. I am the first to put my hand up and say I use to struggle mentally being out of routine. I am a creature of habit and love structure throughout most aspects of my life. But some situations such as travelling, can definitely throw us out of whack, but it’s all about your willingness and drive to stay on track! So how do I maintain my body/stay fit and healthy whilst travelling?
Choose at least three or four days out of your week to wake up early and get that body moving! Whether that’s going for an early morning beach run/sprints, a HIIT workout in your hotel room, or swimming some laps in the pool, your body and mind will thank you!
MY favourite/most affective travelling work out is TABATA! Give this a try for yourself!
DOWNLOAD a timing app and set it- 48 rounds, working period 10 seconds, rest 10 seconds. Choose 8 different cardio based movements and superset! Eg. Complete- Mountain climbers, then jump squats 6 times before moving onto the next two exercises.
6x Mountain Climbers > Jump Squats
6x Walk Out Push Ups> Running High Knees
6x Burpee Hand Release > Bicycle Crunches
6x Jumping Lunges > Double Legged Mountain Climber
I absolutely love healthy, wholesome, fresh food for the taste, the way it makes me feel and how my body responds! So when I do travel I still stick to my rule of 80% clean eating and 20% treat. BUT! Lets face it, on holiday we are most certainly able to have a little leeway and enjoy a variety of yummy foods. So, structure your day! If you know you are going to have a carb up meal and consume most of your calories at a certain point of the day, then opt for your other meals to be more structured and controlled.
Buffet breakfasts can also be detrimental! It is going to take a lot of willpower to hold back from over-consuming pastries/breads, oily meats etc. I will always find myself at the egg station to begin with- creating a delicious omelette where I can monitor it being cooked and have full control over what is going into it! If I am still peckish and craving something sweet, fruit is always next on the plate!
When eating out at restaurants I always opt to have my sauces/dressings on the side. That way I have full control of the excess calories on my plate. Majority of restaurants have clean alternatives and are happy to cater for special nutritional requirements.
WALK, WALK, WALK! What better way to explore the destination your in other than walking! I will always try to travel by foot before I take a taxi! Not only will that allow you to take in all of the experiences and be apart of the raw atmosphere surrounding you. But you will also be burning off excess calories and building up a bit of a sweat!
